Mr. Matura (Instrumental Music)

About Me:

Hello! My name is Joe Matura and I am the Director of Bands at Fall River School District. This is my 2nd year here at Fall River and there have been some great strides in our schools Band Program. I was born and raised in the heart of Chicago (10 minutes from Downtown Chicago) and music has been a huge part of my entire life. I graduated with a B.A from Elmhurst College in December of 2015 and have been teaching ever since. My main instrument is the Tenor Saxophone and my secondaries are Flute, Clarinet, and Guitar. I have been playing professionally with various Sax Quartets and Jazz Combos for several years.

Here at Fall River, my goal is to make our Band/Music program known throughout the Wisconsin Area. Holding onto the tradition of our famous Rock Pep Band, we have been seen on Channel 15 news several times, various parades, and local festivals. With our recent growth in numbers, new ensembles have been in the works such as a jazz band and a marching band. Having multiple ensemble available for student participation is a great way to have students express their creativity.

The primary goal of our Band Program is to provide a well-rounded musical education for every child. This education focuses on building a solid foundation of musical knowledge upon which performances are built. As band directors, we seek to develop the character and citizenship of each member of our band, having each student reach their fullest potential. Understanding that collaboration in an ensemble is important, we guide students to push their creative boundaries in order to guide them down a path towards success. Courses/Description:

Middle School Concert Band:The purpose of this course is to advance the musical abilities that the student gained from being in beginning band. This course will help students continue to develop their musical abilities, critical thinking skills, and overall knowledge of musical concepts. Students will deepen their cultural understanding of the arts by learning, rehearsing and performing music of various cultures, composers and arrangers. Students will broaden their knowledge of large ensemble performing and be able to “fine tune” their blending and balancing skills. To have students reach their high level of success, it is important that the classroom environment be conducive to learning.

The Middle School band ranges from students in grades 6th through 8th. The 6th graders will experience what it is like to rehearse as a full ensemble everyday, unlike their own lesson time in 5th grade. Being their first time in a full ensemble setting, the 6th graders will  learn what it is to find “their sound” in the band. The 7th and 8th graders will be challenged through the selection of harder music and the responsibility of becoming leaders of the band. These students have been playing for 2-3 years and will be focusing on increasing their musical technical ability and pedagogical knowledge.
